I have applied to CIIS's PsyD program for the fall of 2005. Still waiting to hear if I am in, and also deciding between CIIS and Wright.

My interests are in the mind-body connection, especially with regard to eating disorders, depression and anxiety. I am also interested in gender and sexuality issues, including women's issues, male/female gender role problems, sexual identity and sexual disorders.

On a more personal note, I'm interested in the arts (esp. contemporary/controversial art that makes me think and art involving found/recycled objects and pastiche), foreign/indie film, yoga, dancin', live music, DJ music (esp. lounge, trip-hop, underground hip-hop, deep and soulful house and funk), photography, walking, hiking, cities, nature, pop culture, poetry, literature, and travel.

Oh, and I am newly and deeply in love with a fabulous person and artist, and we're moving to the Bay Area this summer.

Hey to all you CIIS people out there!

Welcome Laura and earthgirlie. Somatic psych has got to be a rich area. I'm in internship working with PTSD in veterans, and recognize that there is much that remains unexplored in somatic realm in many modalities of psychotherapy. laura, what population are you serving in your practicum?

I'm going to be starting the Psy.D. program this fall and am really looking forward to it! My interests include tantra, transersonal theory, person-centered theory, jungian psychology and integrating yoga into psychotherapy.

Hi Blair just wnted to say hello when I saw your post. I will be moving to the bay area end of this summer as well, I checked out JFK as well as CIIS and decided on JFK.
Good luck with CIIS, I think it is an awesome school but I don't want to be in the heart of San Fran - believe it or not prefer the pace of the bay area.
Also I am originally from the east cost as well, not PA but NY and than moved on to TX.
You can write me if you want to exchange notes on living in ca (expensive huh?) my e-mail addy is scorpkat@hotmail.com

Hi Blair and anyone who can help,

This move comes as a risk but a fruitful one I hope.

I am moving to San Francisco Spring 2007 from the Catksills in NY and was curious of how the application process went for you at CIIS. They seem to be the most respected school I have found thus far. I am basically leaving my cushy job to follow my heart.

I really appreciate any guidance. I am considering the Integral Counseling MA program.

        Thanks.

          Hi Michael:
I am not sure how the application process for the Integral Counseling MA works, but the PsyD application process was similar to those at other schools: There were several prerequisite courses I had to have taken, needed GREs, letters of recommendation --- all the usual stuff. When I applied in 2004, I was allowed to do my interview by videotape because I lived on the East Coast and was not able to travel to CA during CIIS's formal interview period. I'm not sure if they allow this any more or if they even require interviews for the MAs. I visited CIIS to sit in on some classes, and I highly recommend that if you can do it too. I really like CIIS. It's got its problems, but overall, I am very happy here.

Anyhow, I am glad to answer any specific questions I can for you, but like I said, I am not that familiar w/app processes for other programs.

Kim D'Arcy, the Student Affairs Coordinator, is generally pretty helpful if you have questions about stuff related to moving to San Fran, student activities, health insurance, housing and such. She can be reached at kdarcy@ ciis.edu.

          Good luck!

Hi I'm Ashe, I've been looking at CIIS for awhile now. Still have yet to finish my BA, but I'm interested in the Integral Psych degree.

My interests are all over the map, analytical psych, philosophy, cosmology, transpersonal psych, integral psych.

I'm a channel, I meditate, bellydance, korean yoga, etc etc. So I'm looking to combine all my spiritual interests into the realm of psychology.

Hi, I'm Hilary. I work in the Lifelong Learning program at CIIS. I originally moved to SF to do the Women's Spirituality program at CIIS, but ended up doing most of it at New College of CA. I have an astrology/tarot/shamanism business called Dragon Spirit Healing Arts & Education, doing private readings and teaching classes. I spent 3 years working as a sexuality educator and that work is getting integrated into my other business.

Hi Hilary, welcome. I enrolled in a course called the Dark Mother thinking perhaps it was going to be a Jungian approach, and I found myself in a class with Lucia Birnbaum! I was the only male in the class. I stayed in it and found the students in Women's Spirituality to be impeccable scholars. I was very impressed.

    Hi all!
I'm Megan- and am set to go to CIIS in the fall for the BA program- very excited..... I sense this is the perfect next step for me (one of the issues I had with going back to school was "what do I want to be when I grow up?"...... exploring CIIS as an option has allowed me to just go with my "unknowing-ness" and let it unfold....
leap and a net will appear kind of thinking.......

Has anyone else completed the BA program???

      Hi folks,

I'm an MA student in philosophy from the west coast of Canada trying to work, dream, dance my way towards a PsyD at CIIS.

My interests are scattered but generally orbit around using knowledge and educational encounter to nurture full, round, radiant humanity.

I'm struggling a bit to fit my vision and values in to conventional academia and would love to hear from people about their experiences at CIIS.

I'm also trying to sort out finances and would be grateful for any advice current or previous Canadian students might have to offer around loans and work opportunities.

        Hi all!

It is exciting to me to see the new faces and also continue this connection to CIIS. I am currently in pre-doc internship at a VA hospital. I find that the CIIS PsyD Program certainly prepared me professionally in all respects.

The mainstream internship experience is, as you can probably imagine, a bit of a culture adjustment from the CIIS community. For example, I am finding that among the staff here, very few have had the experience of joining together in simple circle ceremonies. This contrasts with my electives in the PCC Program at CIIS, where I did the majority, hour for hour, of my actual course work. The PCC Program is pervasive in this very basic human type of grouping into circles, moments of arriving in the space, and acknowledgment of contemplative presence; I recall that many of my classes met in circle form.

Anyway, the point is that even very basic elements such as talking sticks, lighting a candle, and acknowledging the space of a circle are startling in a wonderful way to many of the VA employees I have shared them with. I was also startled that they have never been exposed to these basic, ancient group technologies.

Contrast this with an observation I heard from one of my CIIS friends: "People from CIIS even get in circles in the elevators." Blessed be!

Hi there! I'm Aurora and I am currently looking at CIIS as an option for fall 2006 but before I applied I really wanted to talk to some actual students (you know how brochures only show you the very best aspects of a school). I'm currently in Orlando, FL but have always been drawn to the bay area although moving there is an expensive prospect. CIIS seems to want to teach me the things I always wanted to learn but can't find at a major university. I'm considering the PsyD or MA programs (I'll probably apply to both) and it looks like alot of the posters here are in the PsyD program. So, I'd really love to hear from some of you.. you know, the inside scoop! Thanks alot. :)

I don't know where to start, either. I know the PsyD program is APA accredited but just how... "respectable" is a degree from CIIS in professional circles? Why do the four PsyD alumni profiled on the website have PhDs? Am I going to get to SF and tell some random person in casual conversation where I'm going to school and then they're going to laugh at me? (Around here there are a couple schools where the students have no idea what a load of crap they've gotten themselves into until something like this happens to them.) I certainly understand the principles of the school. Its kind of "out there" when compared to other institutions, but does this reflect the mission or the actual scholarly results of students and faculty? I don't mean to sound derogatory, since clearly I'm in harmony with the ideals or I wouldn't be considering it, but I do want to know all the bad aspects since I can get the good far more easily.

                  Sun, June 26, 2005 - 3:17 PM
                  Hi Aurora:
Since I am just starting the PsyD at CIIS this fall, I don't have many answers for you, but I had some of the same concerns about credibility. I spoke with some therapists in the Bay Area, and most had good or neutral things to say about CIIS, nothing bad. I also sat in on a few classes at CIIS and was impressed with the caliber of professors there. However, when I spoke to some profs at university Psych programs, some of them cautioned that CIIS (and PsyD programs in general) is not respected as much as more traditional programs. But I guess you'd have to expect that from someone who is in a more conventional program. My feeling is that CIIS's program sounded very interesting to me, and although I do want the respect of my colleagues, I feel that I can earn that through my knowledge and my work---if someone will look down on me for going to a particular school, there's not much I can do about that.

As for why CIIS's profiled alums have PhDs, I think they used to offer a PhD but then changed it to a PsyD program. (Can anyone confirm this?)

Hope this helps. I am expecting that my experience at CIIS will be all that I hope it can be. I suppose if I am disappointed by the academics or the atmosphere, I can try to transfer, but I am feeling optimistic and excited about the program and about meeting my fellow students and professors. I was looking for a program that had the APA-approved foundation with a more holistic approach, and I feel that CIIS will provide what I was seeking. Good luck in your decision and applications!

I'm not a student at CIIS but I have asked some similar questions (of professors and professional psychologists). The impression I've gotten is that what school you go to makes a great difference when applying for academic positions but very little when applying for professional ones. For professional practice, accreditation and your own credibility are much more important.

                  My own thoughts:

                  (1) If you're enrolling for a PsyD you're probably not aiming at a research position, so the concerns of people who have had to wrestle with the prestige politics of academia are probably not very relevant to your educational choices.

                  (2) If you become a more round, radiant person, and so more credible therapist, through pursuing an alternative educational route -- well, who would sacrifice this for a more presitgious diploma? (And besides, if you want to continue to work with people who share values and spirit that attract you to CIIS, having had the courage to pursue an alternative education may well work out better for you after all.)

                  *Shrug*.

So how 'bout it CIIS? Give me a recruitment position while I work on a degree?

Would you extent this view (about alternative educational routes) to someone looking at Naropa University?

While it is not CACREP accredited, it resonates more with me on a personal and spiritual level.

My name's Alicia :) I have spent four years as part of a PhD program and basically I wish I had found out about a PsyD first. Fortunately for me I didn't really complete any of the hard core PhD stuff (comps, dissertation, etc.) so I can feel free to transfer (phew!). But I had the same questions and I found this great website that explains the difference between PsyD and PhD.

                  hope that helps!

              Hi

you seemed to have asked all the questions that i wanted the answers to! What was your decision? Did you get any useful feedback outside the reply posts?

I graduated from University of Michigan in the fall of 2004, and i've been working as a consultant at IBM (i know - a total departure from psychology, let alone CIIS!) and have finally concluded that the corporate world just isn't right for me... so that's why i'm applying to CIIS - I feel like it'll give me the most out of what i could possibly want from a PsyD program especially considering (as one of the earlier posts also mentioned) the PsyD is applicable basically to therapy rather than research. I'm a little hesitant about the fact that my spiritual growth and interests have been stunted since i graduated and started work... but i guess CIIS is as good a place as any to begin to expand your horizons... Anyways, just wanted to know what your thoughts were and how you're getting on with the application process...

              Hope to hear from you

I have really really liked CIIS's PsyD program so far. Feel free to email me if you want to ask any specific questions (blairdavis1968@yahoo.com).

RE: Your spiritual practice, there are many spiritual people at CIIS, and a lot of the lectures and other programs at school span a range of spiritual practices. I will say, though, that the PsyD program itself is more traditional than spiritual, even though we do have a class in Transpersonal and Experiential Psych and many of the professors are open to and/or interested in matters of spirituality. So, if you have some self-motivation to continue your own spiritual work, you will find like-minded people and an atmosphere that is open to many views at CIIS. But you won't find a LOT of the transpersonal/experiential in the PsyD program---just a smattering. But the fact that people here are so open and thoughful and questioning is really refreshing. I doubt that students at a lot of other schools would feel as comfortable as my classmates and I do discussing our own spiritual practices, philosophies, experiments in psychedelics, social values, etc.

        Aloha,

I graduated in 2001 with a doctorate in Philosophy in the Recovery of Indigenous Mind. I spent 6 years in a distance learning programme adventuring all around the world spending time with global elders and healers who always encouraged me to know who I am and to know the ancestors of the bloodlines that I come from. My doctoral dissertation is called "Remembering Our Ancestors: Recovery of Indigenous Mind as a Healing Process for the Decolonization of a Western Mind."

I taught in the Conflict Resolution department at Portland State University and the philosophy/psychology departments at Hawai'i Prepatory Academy and now am a full-time mama and genealogist/scribe.

I had a challenging time at CIIS. I was there from 1995 to 2001 with the multiple moves and restructuring. Our programme was canned and phased out - along with many "minority" studies. I know things are different at CIIS now and they have settled down. Our indigenous-based programme was not treated well as a programme, yet the programme itself ROCKED! It is the most amazing work I could have possibly dreamed up and it has put me in contact with my birth parents, global elders, my ancestors and myself (I am also adopted).

I LOVE research methodologies, indigenous science, decolonization and academic rigour. I enjoy supporting students through programmes, dissertations, thesis papers and the likes. I am glad to be here!

        Aloha, Paula Noel

hey - my name is kevin and i'm considering applying to CIIS for sometime in the next year or so. right now i'm mostly interested in the MA in integral counseling psych., but i'm also looking at the philosphy, cosmology, and consciousness program. i agree with harmony that really all the programs sound interesting.

my background is a BS in chemistry from berkeley, and then i spent a year working in a cardiology lab at UCSF. so i have no formal academic background whatsoever in psychology. i've had a regular-ish yoga/meditation/pranayama practice for about seven years, and it's getting more regular all the time. although i lack any formal education in CIIS-related things, i have spent a lot of time on my own reading and researching spirituality, psychology, entheogens, consciousness, philosphy, etc.

at the moment i'm on a six-month jaunt through SE asia and will be back in the bay area sometime in august.

if anyone can give me any advice on how difficult it may be to get into an MA psych program with no real background, i would really appreciate it.

thanks much, and maybe see you around CIIS - kevin

I got into the PsyD program without any academic background in psychology (other than having taken Psych 101 as an undergrad and about a year of experience as a volunteer rape crisis counselor). So, I'd say if your grades were good and you have a strong interest in CIIS's MA program, you should have a good shot at getting in!

I'm not sure if this was a question for me, since I said I didn't have a BA or MA in psychology. I'll answer it, though! :-) Nope, I had to fulfull all the prerequisites. I did them by correspondence in the year before I enrolled in CIIS's PsyD program. I had to take 6 prerequs because I was also applying to a couple other schools' PsyD programs, and their prerequs were slightly different from the ones CIIS required.

For anyone who needs an affordable way to handle prerequisite undergrad psych courses, I can recommend the University of Idaho by correspondence (www.class.uidaho.edu/psych/p...ce.html) and also the Colorado State system (sfs.colostate.edu/A29000.cfm). I think each of the courses I took was about $250 to $300, which is pretty cheap. And I could do them at my own pace---there was no timeline other than having to finish all the work within 6 months or a year, depending on the university.

I just joined this tribe. I am cosidering applying for the PhD in Womens Spirituaity for the fall of 06. I have an MA in WS from New College and want to further my studies, but I am really not convinced that a PhD will get me more chances at teaching jobs than the MA and the cost is so high I am fearful. hi all,

i'm a 3rd year expressive arts student at ciis and am in the process of finishing up my MA and practicum. i have many, many interests in general - with respect to psychology, as of late i'm interested in existential themes, jungian theory, getting more rooted in cross-cultural and cross-generational issues, trauma, arts in medicine, sandtray, poetry therapy and the therapeutic use of ritual.

a question to you psy.d folks...how do you like it? i've been toying around with the idea of continuing on for my psy.d. not sure as school has absolutely put me in the poor house - is it worth the extra debt?

      Sun, November 5, 2006 - 4:27 PM
      Hi Krista:
I guess it depends on what you hope to do when you're finished with school. The PsyD program is quite expensive and also very challenging as far as the time and motivation required. But I really love it. However, CIIS's program does not include classes in some of the things you reported an interest in (e.g., sandtray, arts, ritual), and there isn't a whole lot of Jungian theory either. There is some existential stuff, but mostly the mainstream basics, such as psychodynamics, humanistic/transpersonal, CBT, ethics, statistics, projective and cognitive testing, neuropsych, diagnosis of psychological problems per the DSM, and basic counseling skills. The difference at CIIS is that most of the PsyD students and faculty have interests and expertise in less mainstream areas of study, particularly Buddhism and mindfulness aspects of therapy.

I like the program a lot and hope to eventually have a private talk therapy practice. My impression is that you have more options and possibly more earning potential with a PsyD compared with other degrees, but I'm not sure how a PsyD would add to your options in the field of expressive arts therapy. Maybe you could find some therapists in the Bay Area who use expressive arts techniques and ask their opinion about whether adding a PsyD to your load would make sense. (Or if you want to be able to do talk therapy in addition to using expressive arts therapy, then it probably would make sense for you.)

Also, I have heard good things about the PhD depth psychology program at Pacifica if you are really into the Jungian and related areas (www.pacifica.edu).

I hope this helps! Feel free to ask any specific questions if you have some.

i'm on a leave of absence from reed college. i thought i was certain that i was going to major in math and econ and go on the graduate school for economics. but this past summer i finally got around to reading some jung after seeing him referenced in so many other books i had been reading... and i was hooked. i haven't been able to get enough ever since i started reading him. i'm still interested in economics but am currently leaning towards changing majors to psychology and then pursuing a career in that. i found CIIS while surfing on the internet and thought it looked great. i would probably be interested in a phd and going on to do both clinical and research work in psychology, philosophy and religion. it will still be a few years before i finish my BA but i'm considering taking some online classes from CIIS in the meantime to see how i like it. any recommendations on courses or professors? i already know i like ralph metzner but am unfamiliar with the other professors there.

I fall in the ranks of those searching for a graduate program. I just finished my stint at Purdue in philosophy & religious studies, and hope to find myself in a program for the Fall '08. I believe I would like to pursue the CIIS Psy.D I hope to explore the role of psychedelics in treating patients of depression and various disorders. Perhaps with added hands the stigma can be lifted. Best wishes to all -

    hey all!

i just found out about CIIS, and i'm so excited about it! currently a neuroscience major / religion minor at oberlin college. looking to apply for fall '08 in the psyD program. i was recently ordained as a spiritualist minister... so yeah, i'm a clairvoyant/clairsentient medium. i also dabble in shamanism and various meditative practices. i also sing in an electronic/industrial band called cogsucker.

i can't wait until i come visit CIIS and see if it feels right for me.

Hi, I am a new Som~. Am interested in yoga therapy, and topics related to women and children, and culture as a factor in psychotherapy.

I'm a prospective psy d for next fall at CIIS. I'm interested in the intersection between eastern and western psychologies. I've practiced meditation for a few years, and I'd like to see how I could incorporate this practice into some form of therapy. At least, that's the tentative plan.
I live in Philadelphia, graduated three years ago, and have been trying different things since then. I worked as an actor for a couple of years, and this past year I played in a band. Now onto the next thing! It's tough trying to figure out what you want to do with your life, no?

This is a great thread. I'm really enjoying reading up on all of your interests. CIIS seems like a great place.
