Hi,
I'm interested in the psy.d. program and would like to get more info. I was asked for an interview but then didn't hear back from the person for over two weeks. Is this indicative of the program?

I think it's pretty much indicative of the school in general. When I mentioned to someone that my husband was going there they said" Oh, that's the school where nobody ever answers the telephone".

Remember that this last week was Spring Break and no body was at the school.

Yeah, but this was the beginning of March when school was in session. Do you know much about their program? Do they include spirituality in their courses as indicated on their website?

The program is APA accredited, which means they follow the standard sequence of courses that are required for all clinical psychologists in APA programs, so the majority of classes are on specific schools of therapy (practice and theory), group and individual therapy, assessment, ethics, statistics, etc. The curriculum is in the process of being revised, so I am not sure about the current courses, but I did have a class on transpersonal psychology, which includes spiritual approaches, and there have been electives on things like Taoism. Many of the profs and students have an interest in spirituality, Eastern philosophy, alternative healing practices, out-of-the-mainstream ideas, liberal politics ... so this comes through in their lectures and reading selections. Also, once you've gotten through the first year and have time for electives, you can take courses in any of the other CIIS departments (except for some courses that are open only to students in that particular department). For example, I have taken electives in Buddhism and expressive arts.

So, basically, the PsyD profs and students bring an interest in spirituality to the standard psych classes, and there is opportunity to study areas of interest through your electives. If you are looking for a program that is all about spirituality, this is probably not for you. But if you're looking for one that gives you all the basics of clinical psych in an atmosphere that is open-minded and questioning of mainstream psychology, CIIS is that.
