Hi... I am a psychologist studying people's feelings about the winter holidays. Who likes them, who doesn't, and why? I am seeking a sample that is diverse in age, relationship status, and geographic location. If you have 20 minutes or so, please click on the *anonymous* link below. (And feel free to send the link to potentially interested friends and family members) Thanks in advance.

Alternative Psychology Schools: ITP, CIIS, JFK, PGI, Naropa, etc.

I've been relentlessly studying the various alternative psychology programs and here's my assessment, which is obviously partly subjective, partly objective, partly intersubjective, and so forth.

1. The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology: PhD Clinical program isn't APA accredited, so you might have trouble getting licensed in certain states. If your goal is to practice in California or most other states, you're fine though, and this looks to be the best all around alternative school. Integrates mind, body, and spirit. Founders are Jewish, Sufi (yes, I just said they're Jewish sufis. Life is paradox) aikido masters with Harvard PhDs. The ATP (association for transpersonal psych) is down the street and was founded by same guys who founded the ITP. Great faculty: charles tart, jenny wade, etc. Not every student here is a genius, but a few definitely are.

2. The Pacifica Graduate Institute: Beautiful campus, happy people, the place to go if you are into depth psychology, and archetypes, and mythology, etc. a la Jung, Campbell, and Hillman. PhD Clinical program is not APA accredited (there are no accredited PhD Clinical programs at any ultra-alternative resident school) so ditto what was said about ITP. Campus is gorgeous, food is organic, BEDSHEETS are organic. But not the place to go if you are interested in the perennial philosophy, mysticism, the ontological notion of the great chain of being developed by Houston Smith, structural human development etc. The idea is that the Pacifica folks conflate pre-rational and trans-rational states, which is dangerous in psychology. A mystic's visions and a schizophrenic's are not the same. Amazing place, behind the times, not very in touch with transpersonal psychology since Jung and there has been A LOT since Jung. If you are a hindu who goes to burning man and eats psychedelic mushrooms, don't go here. If you are a ex-pot-smoking meditator who likes world music and yogurt and has a secret star-trek fetsish, go here. Classes are one weekend a month. Lots of old people. Did I mention the gorgeous campus?

3. John F. Kennedy University. Most underrated alternative psych school. Has programs in Integral Psychology (in this case think Ken Wilber more than Aurobindo), Transpersonal Psych, Conciousness Studies. Super cool commuter school. Very friendly staff. Not as weird and culty as the other schools (except for the hard-core Wilber freaks in Integral Studies). Worth checking out. JFK seems like it's star is on the rise. Someday they should be king of the hill in alternative psych. For now, ITP is still top dog.

4. Naropa. Focus on meditation is a plus. No PhD or PsyD. Cool, young, good-looking student body. Kind of woo-woo in a post-modern post-structuralist aperspectival relativist kind of way. The Colorado smug hippie asshole is a little different than the California smug hippie asshole (see below).

5: CIIS. Meh. SF is a great town, but the ITP is a half hour train ride from SF so why not go to the ITP? Despite being founded in homage to aurobindo, the school almost systematically shuns hierarchies (a performative contradiction in that they create a hierarchy wherein hierarchies are on the bottom, get it?) and many faculty are very stuck in a nihilistic "everyone's truth is equally valid" soup of woo-woo. If you want to go to the temple of post-modern liberalism, why not just go to ANY OTHER UNIVERSITY in America? If you want to go to a school where development and evolution are acknowledged as real (an oak tree is more developed than an acorn; a cell is more complex than a molecule; martin luther king is more advanced than hitler) check out JFK or the ITP. The PsyD program is APA accredited, but a PhD is a better degree than a PsyD in that you can still practice and are more able to land teaching jobs. Also, PsyD CIIS students don't get to take many, if any, cool alternative classes. PhD Clinical Students at ITP certainly do; they're made to. If you're not going to get to take cool alternartive classes, you might as well check out the programs at JFK, Fielding, and Saybrook. Most CIIS alum working at the other alternative schools got their PhD (back when CIIS gave them) in Psychology or in Philosophy (which still exists). One credit to CIIS is that Stan Grof, the world's most badass psychologist teaches here, but if you really want contact with him you should just go to his private workshops or check out Wisdom University. Stan is also on the board of directors (I think it's called the coven of wizards or circle of jedis or something) at ITP. If you want a PhD in religion, I would say look at Wisdom, but otherwise Philosophy, Cosmology, and Conciousness at CIIS is pretty cool. For Psych...meh.

Practicum Sites

Hello Tribe!

I'm a second year master's student of counseling psych at ITP and am currently searching for a practicum site for next year. My school's list of approved sites in San Francisco is not at all comprehensive... being that the school is in Palo Alto. My hope is to find an intriguing site in SF which allows for transpersonal, creative expression, or depth psych orientation. I'm also interested in working with the general population vs. strictly the elderly or children.

I'm wondering if anyone has a list of sites in SF that work with first year practicum students (perhaps from the CIIS website)... and would be willing to share that information with me?

Thanks!
Visiting this Weekend

Hello all...
I've been looking at CIIS for some time now as a future possibility, and as I am finally visiting the Bay Area this weekend (Fri through Tues) I am wondering if there are any folks who would be interested in connecting and sharing their experiences. I am mostly interested (at this juncture!) in the M.A. program, and I have written the school contact to see about arranging a visit perhaps on Monday. Unfortunately, it seems there aren't a lot of classes actually in session on Mondays, but I hope to at least see the campus and other students and get more of a "hands-on" feel for the goings on at CIIS. If this weekend doesn't work out (short notice and all) I'm sure I will be visiting the Bay again sometime this spring, and would love to make some connections with some folks willing to share their experiences.
Thanks!
Chance

Question about admission to ICP program at CIIS -- interview process

Hey all!

My good friend just applied to the ICP program at CIIS, and just received a call from an admissions officer scheduling him for an interview. Apparently it's a group interview, and there will be 3 applicants there, 1 professor, and a current student in the program.

My question is... does everyone get an interview? Any tips on what to expect?

Thanks much for reading and your time,

CIIS Psy D visit

Hey, all

I just jumped at the chance to visit San Francisco and CIIS from the 10th to the 12th of this month. I've been looking at the Psy D program for a while now, and it's tops on my list. If there is a student currently enrolled in the program that might be willing to grab a coffee with me to discuss their experience, I would really appreciate it. I'm coming all the way from Philadelphia, and I'd really like to maximize the time I have in town. I'm definitely interested in CIIS, but living on the other side of the country has made it difficult for me to really experience what the school has to offer.

Thanks,
Alex

New Tribe: Personality Theatre

With the moderator's permission I'd like to introduce a new tribe, entitled Personality Theatre.

Description:

"We constantly produce a display, a theatrical scene. For each situation we create the appropriate backdrop and the appropriate lighting. We also have the appropriate actors, mainly ourselves, who appear on the stage. We carry on this kind of play, this theatrical game, so to speak, to feel out the total effect our stage set is having."
-Chogyam Trungpa

A place for the discussion of illusion, delusion, spiritual materialism, creation of personality, destruction and transformation of personality, magic, magick, funhouses, tricksters, labyrinths and carnivals of all sorts...mostly in relation to the growth and evolution of our inner and outer selves.

Essentially, a place to wonder about the masquerade of daily living...for the play we put on for ourselves and others.
(Wasn't that a wonderfully theatrical summation?)

art therapy program

Hello,
I'm very interested in the art therapy program at CIIS. Is anyone on this tribe currently in this program, or has completed it? Can you tell me anything you can about it that isn't already on the CIIS website? I don't have a background in psychology, but I do have a BFA in Illustration.
The only hesitation I have with CIIS is the money. I'm scared shitless of being $50,000 in debt!!! I have a dream to create an art farm community/healing retreat center which of course will also cost tons of money and I'm scared of having to work in an office for years and years after school to pay off my debt and save enough to start the community (or any kind of business). Is this the best way to go to get into art therapy, or are there cheaper ways to do it?

Also, can therapists be travellers, or do they generally have to stay in one spot the rest of their lives because they have to keep in touch with local patients?

MA Drama Therapy or Psy D at CIIS

Hello tribe :o)

I am applying to CIIS for the fall, to the Drama Therapy program., and feel excited and curious about the school.

Being new to California, though, I have many questions about what degrees open which doors. I have recently been thinking about the PsyD, and wondering if it would make more professional sense to apply to that program instead...?

I'd welcome any reflections/opinions/advice/questions, especially from those of you attending or who have attended CIIS....

A brief description of my situation: I am an art therapist and counsellor, trained in Canada where I worked as a therapist with children and families for the past 7 years. I recently moved to California, as I met and married a lovely man who lives here, who has a son who lives here -- making this the place where we need to be.

In moving, though, I found I can not simply start work here as a therapist. Although I have two Masters degrees in human services that qualify me to work as a therapist in Canada, these degrees are not recognized by the Board of Behavioural Sciences. So, to continue on this path that I love I must recertify. The two options I'm weighing: MFT or PsyD.

I have been leaning towards the MA in Drama Therapy, an MFT program, as I feel very passionate about the power of the arts in therapy and would appreciate developing another arts-therapy specialty. I have a theatre performance background, and a dance background, so the Drama Therapy program feels like a beautiful fit. Also, I love working with groups, and the emphasis on group work in this program engages me.

Yet, as I already have two Masters degrees, I wonder if the PsyD might offer something significantly different for my professional growth and development in terms of leadership in the field than a third Masters would? Also, I wonder if the pay rate in private practice (for third party payment) would be higher with a PsyD than with an MFT (meaning less work hours for the same wage)? Do you think it is easier to find part-time (not tenured) teaching and supervisory work with a PsyD than with an MFT? Is a private practice more viable with a PsyD?

I would most like to create my own practice, and also do some teaching and supervising of students and interns.

An important piece is that when I look at the coursework of the two programs I feel much much more drawn towards the Drama Therapy work. Those courses feel like a playful adventure. When I look at the PsyD courses I just feel tired ;oP

Having already completed 11 years of University, I question if I would have the stamina for the PsyD process...I'd like to be doing other things with my time than being in school.

Thanks for your thoughts,
Katrina

ICP at CIIS vs. Naropa

i've been accepted into the ICP program and i'm struggling to make a decision between CIIS and Naropa. i'm leaning heavily towards CIIS because i live in SF and my family is in the area - moving to Boulder would mean a major upheaval in my life and i wouldn't have a community there. but i've gotten mixed feedback about the ICP program and the people i've tried to contact (contacts from the admissions office) haven't called me back.

i'm hoping from some advice from some who is either a current student or a graduate from the ICP program.
how did you like the program?
did you feel a lot of personal growth during the process?
why did you decide to enroll in ICP?
what were the major downfalls of the program?
what did you like best about it?
was there a stong community feeling to the program?

anything to help me make this decision!
thanks
m

I am looking into CIIS as a potential school to continue my education, specifically the PCC program...Is there anyone here in that progam, or who can give me some info on it...positive or negative? I mean it intrigues me and seems to resonate with me, but I'd like to hear some direct experiences of it/opinions on it.
thanks

Greetings CIIS students!

I am being called... nay... DRAWN INEXORABLY towards a Philosophy, Cosmology & Consciousness PhD at CIIS. I am a Mexican who got a bachelor's in a small college in Oregon, and am now working in Japan. CIIS has appeared like a ray of light in a very dark, confused period of my life. I feel like I belong there. The focus of study, student body, it all seems to have been combined to create the kind of program I always dreamed about, but never found... until now!

Of course there are a million questions, and I'm sorry to swamp this tribe with yet another "prospie with questions" thread. I am pretty sure I'll be going, as soon as I can figure out how to slip out of my current job without too many waves tearing through my world. I have no savings, predictably, but that is entirely my own problem and I'll figure something out somehow.

Anyway, I wanted to ask what your living situations are like. Does anybody live across the bay and commute to downtown? Does anybody do this on bike? I am wondering about this, because craigslist simply does not list places under $1,000 dollars a month anywhere around campus. Do you think I could probably find a cheaper place by showing up and checking the bulletin boards on campus? Or by word of mouth?

I'd love to hear of any PCC students out here on Tribe. Please feel free to message me directly if you don't want to post out here :-)

Peace, my brothers and sisters...

Hi,
I'm seriously considering applying to the program at ciis and was wondering however what makes ciis different and unique? What specifically gives the program it's blend of "East and West"? Is it the particular classes taught, the perspectives with which they're taught, or simply a combination of the two?

Thanks

Hi,

I have a question for those of you planning to get the MFT license or become a licensed psych. I still am not sure what the benefit of one is over the other.

Can you have a private practice, or practice independently from gov. systems with an MFT? I was originally planning to go for the PsyD, however I feel a timeline crunch in my life...I would love to hear from both sides what your future plans are and what you see as pros and cons of both :)

Thanks!

info on Psy.D. program??

Hi, I'm seriously considering the Psy.D. program at CIIS next year, but have a few questions hoping someone could answer:

1) What are the typical class sizes?
2) Do they require a Psych. GRE or just the general GRE?
3) Since the Psy.D. has to follow the APA guidlines, does that mean that CIIS "sells out" to mainstream reductionistic/materialistic thinking? Or do the teachers make a genuine effort to approach the topics from within a more transpersonal/spiritual context?
4) The website says the entire program can be completed in 4 years (with 3 years of cousework and the 4th year full time internship). Does this pace require a full time load during the summers?

Those are the biggies for now. Any other offerings of advice/warnings/encouragement would be greatly appreciated,

Just found out I'll be going to CIIS in the fall-- PsyD program. Just found out as in TWO DAYS AGO!!! I live in Orlando, Florida right now and so my significant other and I will be moving cross country in a little over a month. I'm totally lost! Where do I start? Any recommendations for cheap neighborhoods? I'd love to share a house with someone but my SO can't deal with other people, so we need a little one bedroom apartment. What am I going to do??

I think I might start hyperventilating.

*breath in breath out... calming thoughts*

Woah.

Greetings all,

I'm currently ready to dive into a career/life change and feeling very excited about it. I'm certainly feel pulled towards a body-mind oriented healing path including somatic psychology, movement therapy, massage, yoga, etc...

Anyway, I currently need to first get my massage certification and am looking at either National Holisitic Institute in San Fran or Boulder College of Massage Therapy. Likewise I'm torn between my eventual goal of either CIIS or Naropa.

If anyone has any idea, thoughts, adivce to offer regarding making these choices (including Boulder/Denver vs. SF in general) I'd be very grateful!

Be well,

Hi all,

My name is Tami, and I have enjoyed reading the informative posts on the Psy.D program at CIIS. I am an older student (42), and am just now in the process of completing my undergrad degree in Psychology. I have been looking at graduate programs (both Ph.D. and Psy.D) for a few months now, and I believe CIIS would be a good personal choice for several reasons.

Can anyone provide me with a rough total cost (tuition and fees) for the entire Psy.D. program at CIIS? I have looked on the website and see the breakdown by semester, but I know the program also builds in a dissertation and internship, and it's difficult to tell how many semesters of full tuition are required. I am really trying to determine what type of long-term debt I may be in for. Thanks!

Hey, does anyone have advice on cheap health insurance for a full-time adult student? I think I can get a really really basic plan (barely covers anything, but good in case of big emergency) for $60/mo through Blue Cross, but I didn't know if CA has something better. (I am coming from the East Coast and have had HMO coverage through my job until now.) I am too old for most student health plans that I have seen (most seem to cut off at 25 y/o).

Thanks!

There are many parallels and intersections between Hinduism and Buddhism. This tribe has started of the acknowledgement of similarities, as well as differences between these two traditions. In a society and historical time where so many cultures are all coming to meet one another at the dinner table, many practioners may feel drawn to different aspects of Hinduism and Buddhism. This tribe has been created in honor of both traditions as a space where discussion can occur respectfully and freely about these spiritual philosophies, as well as what its like to draw one's practice from these two different paths. Feel free to bring up teachers and sources of inspiration to you in Buddhism (all its forms....Tibetan, Zen...), Yoga, Martial Arts, Ayurveda, Rumi, Hafiz, Kabir, Shamanic practices, modern day teachers such as Eckhart Tolle and David Deida, science of Siegal and Goleman, Zen Therapy, Transpersonal Psychology, Somatic Psychology, Carl Jung. Where do we all draw from and how does it all fit together???? Let's meet at the intersection....

hi there~

I am a california native, currently a 2nd year MA student from Naropa University in Wilderness Therapy/Transpersonal Psychology. I am longing to get back to my home of the Bay Area, and work as an MFT Trainee-- so I am searching for a site currently.
Any help or resources are much appreciated-- I have been researching diligently, but am currently at a dead end. Ideally, becuase I am studying the relationship to the nature world as part of the healing process, a site that would allow/support/encourage such "eco" or wilderness therapies would be best- but is not essential. Basically, I need a certain number of clinical hours and weekly sessions with a supervisor-- in the Oakland/Berkeley area.

Thanks for any help you can offer!!
~shana~

I'm interested in the Somatics MA program but don't have clear ideas of what I want to do with it.

How are some of you planning to use the degree?

Also, what was the application like - particularly the personal statement? Would anyone be willing to share some of their's (I'm several years away from applying, but am always puzzeled by personal statements)
And most importantly why did you guys decide on CIIS over anywhere else? and are you glad you picked CIIS? Hope to hear from you guys!!

Need Information--please help if you can!

Hi,
I am considering going back to school to become licensed to practice psychotherapy. I am trying to decide between an MFT or an LCSW track. I think I ahve decided that a PHD/PsyD is too much work/$ for not enough difference in pay or opportunity. I am primarily interested in a private psychotherapy practice. I am already trained in Hakomi body-centered therapy.

I am wondering if anyone from either path could talk with me--I would love it if I could call you--or I can give you my # if you email me.

Some questions:

Is it true that more insurance companies cover those w/ an LCSW than an MFT?

Has anyone done a state school program for an MFT track? (instead of the expensive yet popular alternative ones like CIIS, JFK--just can't afford them!)

Any information about what happens if you move out of state w/ an MFT? What do you have to do to be validated in other states?

Any info as to the differences in difficulty/workload between the 2 programs? I know there is a written exam at the end of the MFT track for licensure (used to be oral I guess)--what about for an LCSW?

Thanks--I appreciate and info that anyone can offer and if you would be willing to talk--please send me a message.

Anyone trained in Hakomi therapy?

I am looking for others in the Santa Cruz area who are trained in Hakomi therapy, to trade practice sessions and possibly start a peer group for practice and supervision. I was trained through Boulder (now called Sensorimotor Psychotherapy), which included the Trauma training segment. Would especially love to connect with others from that training, but all Hakomi-ites are welcome! Please reply to me directly by cliking on my profile as I probably won't keep up with the discussion thread as well. Thanks.

hello, I can't believe this is the first CIIS Tribe

With all the fun and enlightenment seekers among the tribes , I am sort of amazed that CIIS does not have a presence here. It would seem like a nice safe place for CIIS folks to share their experiences, psychospiritual journeys, and favorite classes, along with whatever advice or critiques they may offer for prospective students.

In addition, it seems like a natural place to share constructive support for those going through the sometimes challenging path of higher education at such an energetic and diverse institute.

Hello- I'm new to this list, my name is Nadine. I am finishing up my applicaiton for teh Somatics program, MA - in the school of professional psychology.

I was wondering if any of you had any hints on 'presentation'

Do I bind it up in a nice way? Just stack everything together in a manilla envelope? Do I included a photo?

Any thoughts are appreciated- Thank you! Have a day! ~Nadine

For anyone interested, I discovered that there is an open house at CIIS tomorrow:

http://www.ciis.edu/news/openhousesp05.html

everyone here already might be at the school already, but if not, you can check it out. I know I will.

Is anyone here in the Cosmology and Consciousness program>?
